It's really just a matter of time before my kids and I end up in the hospital with raging cases of salmonella. I mean, how many times can we tempt fate before the God-of-Raw-Eggs-and-Uncooked-Batter casts a vengeful eye on us for being so careless?
I have a nasty little habit of mixing up a box of Duncan Hines cake mix (or brownie mix or whatever) with no intention of ever actually putting the batter in a pan and baking it. Usually I get a craving for the sweet concoction, toss it all together (including the three raw eggs) and proceed to hunker down with a spoon. Lest I be called selfish, I hand my kids spoons, too. So the three of us sit there hunched over a bowl of uncooked batter, spooning it into our greedy little mouths like soup.
Yesterday we made Devil's food batter, and as the spoons were clanking together battling for the biggest glob of mix, I couldn't help but think that most people would consider it terribly irresponsible considering the health risks. But I chose to ignore that, and instead considered it a damn good afternoon snack.
