The long anticipated holidays are over, and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. We had a great time over here in the O'Connell household, although I think my children have turned into Nintendo zombies, their hands permanently stuck to their new DSs.
With 2007 only one day away, it's that time of year when we look back and think, "What happened to 2006?" I couldn't tell you, because every year seems to go faster and faster and become a blur the older I get. Which brings me to a book that comes out this week. IT'S A WONDERFUL LIE: 26 TRUTHS ABOUT LIFE IN YOUR TWENTIES.
I have an essay in the book, so two weeks ago I received my author's copy and took it to the gym to read on the treadmill. I LOVED reading the essays written by my friends. It was quite enjoyable reading about their twenties - the inappropriate jobs and wardrobes, the relationship woes, the friendships that faltered. Those glimpses into their twenties gave me a little more insight into who they are and how they got that way.
When I got to my essay, which falls into the "relationship" section of the book, I got a chance to glimpse myself at 22 - and it was pretty scary (others might choose misguided, or even sadly young and slightly bonkers, but I choose to describe myself as scary because the thought that I was the 22 year old girl I read about frightens me). Being 38 and reading about that 22 year old girl made me want to warn every other woman in her twenties not to make my mistakes. But that's what twenties are for, as I learned reading the essays in LIE. Hopefully you make your mistakes and get them out of your system (or at least know how to recover better the next time you do the exact same thing). No matter how old you are, the essays in this book will take you back to your twenties and make you cringe, smile, and laugh at yourself. And that's a great way to ring in the new year.
