It's amazing what a little money will do to a girl. I put $10 in my office NCAA pool, and I've become obsessed now that there's a $100 pot at the end of the March Madness rainbow. I find myself checking ESPN to see how my teams are doing. I know at any one time where my competition stands. And I find myself chanting "Go Memphis" before I close my eyes at night (I have them going all the way because the coach, John Calipari, did one hell of a job with my husband's UMass team several years ago). So far, I've only lost one team that I had going to the Final Four (WI, due to some stupid allegiance to the Badgers just because I lived in a neighboring state for 15 years). I've got my fingers crossed that a week from Monday I'll be bringing home the jackpot, proof that picking teams simply because your friends went to a school (Georgetown), your husband's alma mater was once coached by a guy who did a great job (Memphis) or you like the color of the team's uniform (UNC) can actually take you a long way.
note: just checked ESPN and Memphis is down to Ohio State with 19 minutes to go, am kinda freaking out...must go park self in front of TV and send positive vibes.

Last night I took my husband into the city so we could celebrate his 40th birthday. We watched a little college basketball at a bar with a bunch of Georgetown fans (good thing they won), then went back to our lovely hotel and prepared for dinner at The Federalist. We were dressed in our finest and had a great table in the corner where we could be alone. After our appetizers arrived John leaned over to me and said, "You know, I may be 40 but at heart I'm still 25." And I knew exactly what he meant. Across from us there was a table of four doing the whole wine conisseur thing - viewing the bottle, rinsing the wine in the glass, smelling, tasting, swishing it around in their mouths. While it was quite impressive to watch, we're just beer people. We've never accepted a waiter's offer of a wine menu in our lives. Deep down, if the bottle requires an opener vs. a simple twist of our wrists, we feel like we're living large. And while our dinners were delicious, I must admit that the plate of nachos I had while watching the Hoyas was pretty damn good, too.
