We were out Friday night, but when we got home there was a very breathless message from my mom on our voice mail. Now, I knew that she and my dad were in LA for the weekend, where they have an apartment to escape to when the 100+ degree heat of Palm Springs starts making them batty. And, in the past when I've received such voicemails it's meant one thing - a star sighting. A few weeks ago my mom called me from a resort in Laguna. Her voice was just above a whisper as she relayed the scene on the beach next to her - a sweet sixteen party with a bunch of girls and the birthday girl's mother. Apparently Demi brought her daughter and her friends to celebrate the occasion with a little spa vacation. My mom was impressed at how well behaved they all were and how Demi was always with them. So, when I called my mom back Saturday morning I knew that something similar had happened to them the night before. Turns out she and my dad were out to dinner and they were seated right next to Eric Clapton. And then Annette Benning and Warren Beatty walked in with two of their kids. And then John Laroquette (yeah, I know, not exactly the most exciting star spotting, but one none the less).

So it got me to thinking - have I ever been star struck? And the answer was no. As an Oprah fan in college, I was convinced that when I moved to Chicago I'd see her shopping on Michigan Avenue or something. We'd strike up a conversation and the next thing I'd know, Oprah and I would be buddies. But, alas, no such luck. I'm not hanging out at Oprah's Santa Barbara estate tossing back cocktails and laughing at Stedman's jokes. Instead I'm sitting on my deck in the suburbs of Chicago sipping out of a cold Miller Lite can. Ah, the good life.
