Last night I went to see my friend Stephanie Lessing read from her new bookMISS UNDERSTANDING. Two other author friends, Hank Phillippe Ryan and Marianne Mancusi, met me to cheer Stephanie on (or heckle, depending on our moods). After the reading, which was wonderful, Hank, Marianne and I went across the street to a place I just loved, Eastern Standard in the Commonwealth Hotel. It wasn't their food that had me giddy, but a drink called a Strawberry Cobbler. Even though it sounds like dessert, the sublime beverage is simple: strawberry-infused vodka, mushy strawberries in the vodka and fresh mint. Delish. I will be making some in my very own home as soon as I can figure out where to get fresh strawberries in November.

I have to concur: the reading was excellent, so was the company, but the strawberry cobbler... oh my! That has to win Best Drink Ever award hands down.

If you learn how to make them I'm so coming over!!

Some nights are just magical. The reading: A gaggle of Boston University students crowds into the reading room at the Kenmore Square Barnes and Noble-they're rapt and attentive as Stephanie reads from her hilarious new novel, Miss Understanding. (That's all very cleverly double meaning-y, you have to read it). They cheer and applaud when she's finished, and clamor for their own signed copies. Stehanie's off to some other glam event--Jennifer and Marianne and I walk thorgh the dangerous intersection of Brookline Ave and Beacon Street (I'm bringing up the rear because my four inch heels, I have to admit, although certianly my faves, are not the best for walking) into the Kenmore's newest hot spot, Eastern Standard, already packed with students and professors and who knows who else.
SO here's the key. I order the shiraz, very safe and since I've had no food all day, not that dangerous. M and J scour the menu for the coolest hippest drink, and come up with this strawberry thing. Which does sound good. What arrives...is ambrosia. You can't believe it. (Jen gave me a sip.) Of course, the two of them have discovered a new taste sensation. When Jen concocts the recipe (Or I might do it myself) it'll need a whole website of its own. Watch this space! Jennifer's in charge
