I've stumbled upon the secret to ever-lasting youthfulness. Twice this week I've been carded at liquor stores that usually don't give me a second look (and lest you think it a tad excessive that I spend so much time in liquor stores, remember, it was a holiday week). And the only thing these two visits had in common? My hair was in pigtails with braids. The first time I figured they were just cracking down for the fourth of July. But today? I actually said to the man behind the counter, "Um, I'm practically forty." Then I handed over my ID, which he scrutinized. As he was doing this I told him, "The funny thing is, if I was actually under age there's no way in hell I'd come in here to buy a six pack of Corona with my hair in pigtails and braids." Which is true. Back then the goal was to look old enough to pass for 21. Today my goal was to keep my hair off my face. And apparently the braids also take 20 years off my face as well. Who'd have guessed?
